Building a garden bench
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the bench. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the legs at the right size and to lock them together with a piece of lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slat and insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the legs. Add waterproof glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Building the frame of the bench is a straight forward process, if you use the right tools and woodworking techniques. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size and to lock them together with galvanized screws and waterproof glue. Make sure the corners are right-angled before attaching the frame to the sides. Plumb the legs with a spirit level and check if the frame is perfectly horizontal.
Continue the woodworking project by building the backrest supports of the wooden bench. Cut both ends of the supports at 15 degrees and lock them to the frame of the bench with galvanized screws after drilling pilot holes. If you want to add character to the bench, cut the top of the supports in a decorative manner. Align the supports with attention and add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid structure.
Next, attach the 1×6 slats to the seat of the bench. Cut notches on both ends of a slat in order to fit it around the back supports. Place the slats equally-spaced in order to get a professional result. Drill pilot holes through the slats before inserting the screws, as to prevent the wood from splitting. Smooth the edges with a piece of sandpaper to enhance the look of the bench.
One of the last steps of the project is to fit the slats between the supports. Drill pilot holes at both ends and insert the 2 1/2″ screws into the supports, after making sure the slats are horizontal and equally spaced. Center the slats to the supports, in order to get a professional look.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Check if the components are secured into place properly and if the structure is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges that could injure you. See all furniture plans HERE.
PRO TIP:Â Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
