If you want to build a small planter box for your garden or window, you should follow the instructions described in this article. While there are many plans and designs you could choose from, we show you planter box plans free that can be built by any person with basic woodworking techniques. Remember that you can adjust the size of the planter as to fit your needs, but you can use the same techniques to get the job done.

As in any other garden woodworking project, you need to use weather-resistant lumber, such as cedar, pine or redwood. Always align the components at both ends with great attention before locking them into place with finishing nails. In addition, we recommend you to drill pilot holes and to add wood glue to the joints. In this manner, you will build a rigid planter box that has a nice appearance.

Building the frame

Building the frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame of walls of the planter box. In order to get the job done accurately, we recommend you to us 1×1 lumber for the corner posts and 1×2 lumber for the side slats.

PRO TIP: Cut the components at the right dimension and secure them to the corner posts with finishing nails. Make sure there are no gaps between the slats and add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Continue the woodworking project by installing the rest of the side components. Cut the slats at the right size and attach them to the corner posts with finishing nails. You can adjust the height of the planter box according to your needs and therefore the number of courses.

PRO TIP: Check if the corners are right-angled and measure the diagonal of the planter box, before continuing the project.

Installing the flooring

Installing the flooring

Attaching the bottom of the planter box is easy, as you just need to cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood and to fit it into place with finishing nails. Drill pilot holes trough the slats, to prevent the wood from splitting. As you can see in the image, you need to cut small notches in the piece of plywood, otherwise it won’t fit around the corner posts.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and if the frame is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. Moreover, the components should be installed properly, making sure there are no gaps between the slats.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
