If you want to learn more about how to build a patio bench, you have to take a close look over the free plans in the article. This large wooden bench is the perfect addition to your patio, because it is sturdy, easy to build and it looks fabulous. I also have free plans for the corresponding chair, so make sure you check it out as well. The plans are free, come with 3D step by step diagrams and lots of instructions. PDF download and Print friendly.

If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to plan everything with attention, as to prevent costly mistakes and to build a professional diy bench. Invest in high quality materials, such as cedar, pine or redwood, as the bench will be exposed to all kinds of weather. Apply a few coats of paint over the components, to enhance their appearance and to protect them from bad weather.

Garden Chair – Free DIY Plans

Legs-for-bench

Legs-for-bench

The first step of the project is to build the sides for the garden bench. Use 2×4 lumber for the legs and armrests. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.

Assembling the sides for the bench

Assembling the sides for the bench

Lay the components on a level surface. Align the edges as shown in the diagram. Add glue to the joints, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble the sides thoroughly.

Seat support

Next, we will need to seat frame. Use 2×4 lumber for the components. Cut the 4 supports as shown in the diagram. Use a miter saw to make the 15 degree angle cut.

Assembling the frame of the seat

Lay all the components on a level surface and align the edges flush. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to assemble the seat frame.

If want your bench seat to be larger in width or length, this is the time to make adjustments to my plans.

Attaching the sides to the bench

Next, attach the sides to the seat frame of the wood patio bench. Align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Leave no gaps between the components. Use a spirit level to check if the seat is horizontal and make sure the corners are square. This step is a little tricky, so it would be a good idea to have another person help you with the bench assembly.

Use 2×4 lumber for the backrest supports. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat frame of the diy bench. Use a jigsaw to round the exposed corner of the supports.

Seat slats - large patio bench

Use 1×4 slats for the bench seat. Align the first slat flush to the front of the seat. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly. Fit 1/2″ plywood between the slats to create even gaps.

Back rest slats - patio bench

We recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. Sand the chair with 150 grit sandpaper until everything is smooth.

PRO TIP: Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building diy projects.

Why is there a $3.99 charge for this when it says “Free Plans”?

Reply
Thomas - 6:53 pm

Because it never says Free Download. If 3.99 is a fortune for you or you don’t want to support the blog, you still have access to the plans online. Thank you for the understanding.

It says free download multiple times. I don’t mind the charge, but don’t lie about it.

All the plans on this blog used to be free download. Until, someone used my PDFs to sell them on other websites. That is why, the PDF download is not free anymore. I have removed the free PDF download from the site. Thanks for the understanding.

I really love all your plans. Unfortunately, I am an idiot and I cannot build anything… but I still love watching woodworking plans online.
