Building a garden bench
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs for the garden bench. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 1×6 slats and to make the cuts with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges by using sandpaper and remove the residues before continuing the project.
The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the slats to the legs of the bench. Cut the 1×6 slats at the right size and attach them to the legs, making sure you leave about 1/2″ between them. Leave 3/4″ front the slats to the exterior edges of the legs.
Drill pocket holes along the side legs and secure them to the front and back faces, by inserting 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and align everything with attention. Add glue to the joints in order to create a rigid structure.
In order to add extra-support to the bench, we recommend you to fit several 1×6 supports. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the frame of the bench using galvanized 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.
Attach the seat slats to the bench, making sure you place them equally-spaced. Insert 1 1/4″ screws through the supports into the slats and add waterproof to enhance the bond of the components.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.
PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
