  • 2 – 4 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 17 3/4″ FRAME
  • 3 – 3 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 35″ APRONS
  • 4 – 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 3 1/2″ SUPPORTS
  • 5 – 8 pieces of 1×3 lumber – 48″, 2 pieces of 1×2 lumber – 19 1/4″ TABLETOP

  • 3 pieces of 1×4 lumber – 8 ft
  • 1 piece of 1×2 lumber – 4 ft
  • 4 pieces of 1×3 lumber- 8 ft
  • 1 piece of 2×4 lumber – 2 ft

Building the sides of the table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the coffee table. Cut the components out of 1×4 lumber, making sure you take accurate measurements and use a professional saw. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the legs, after making sure you align them properly. Add glue to the joints, as to enhance the rigidity of the coffee table.

Continue the woodworking project by at attaching the aprons to the sides of the table. Make sure the corners are square and lock the aprons to the legs with galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints, in order to get the job done in a professional manner.

Cut the corners supports out of 2×4 lumber and secure them to the table with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the supports before attaching them to the frame, in order to get a professional result.

Build the tabletop of the coffee table using 1×4 slats and 1×2 supports. Lay the slats on a level surface, making sure they are equally-spaced and lock them together with the 1×2 supports. Make sure you create a rigid structure, otherwise the end result won’t raise up to your expectations.

Center the frame of the table to the tabletop, making sure you pay attention to the instructions described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frame. Leave no gaps between the components. See my plans for a 6 ft patio table.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.
