Building a toy box
The first step of the project is to attach the floor frame to the corner legs of the toy box. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and secure them to the legs with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid frame.
The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the 1×4 slats to the frame of the toy box, as shown in the plans. Make sure you leave no gaps between the slats before inserting the screws and drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
Fit the 1×6 slats between the side legs, as shown in the image. Drill pilot holes at both ends and align them properly before inserting the 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the slats or use tongue and groove boards.
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the front and back walls into place. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws and use the same techniques described above to get the job done in a professional manner.
Building the lid is a straight-forward job, but you need to take accurate measurements and to lock all the components together tightly. Lay the slats on a level surface, leave no gaps between the slats and fit the supports to lock them together. Secure the trims to the lid with finishing nails and waterproof glue.
Build the back support and attach the lid into place by using several metal hinges. Use a circular saw to make the longitudinal angle cut. Leave no gaps between the components and lock them together as shown in the image.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough to support the soil. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.
PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
