How to Plant Thuja Occidentalis

by Thomas

If you want to learn more about how to plant thuja occidentalis you have to take a close look over the instructions in the article. Planting these decorative trees is a super easy way to enhance the look of your garden and make it green all year round. For example, I planted the thuja trees next to a pathway to make a green curtain. In this article I show you how to set the trees in a straight line and how to plant them equally spaced.

Make sure the thuja trees come from a proper, authorized source, otherwise you will have a hard time keeping them alive on the long run. In addition, the soil where you will plant them needs to be rich in nutrients. Moreover, you need to water the decorative arbors daily because they need a lot of humidity to grow fast and healthy. You should also read the instructions that come with the plants.

Planting thuja occidentalis

Garden-Auger

I will show you my method for planting thuja occidentalis. Therefore, I like using a post hole auger because this makes digging the holes a piece of cake. This is a 6″ post hole digger which is very good for planting the 32″ thuja trees.

After deciding the location for the first thuja, we dug the hole. You don’t have to go deeper than 12″ for these small decorative trees. Twist the auger slowly making sure you go vertically.

Taking-the-soil-out-from-the-hole

Take out the soil from the hole until it’s all clean. You can use a shovel to enlarge the hole, if the decorative trees roots are large.

Use a tape measure to determine the location for the rest of the decorative trees. I split the distance so that the thuja are planted equally spaced.

Pour some water to the bottom of the holes and then add soil. Let it soak the water for a few minutes and mix them together. Take the thuja off the plastic container.

Set the thuja occidentalis into the holes and make sure it is plumb. Check from both directions.

Use a garden trowel to fill the hole with soil, while keeping the thuja vertical.

Compact the soil around the trees so you set them firmly into place. Double check if the thuja is still vertical and perfectly aligned with the rest of the trees.

Last but not least, you need to water the thuja trees and repeat that every morning, because they need a lot of water.

Hi.
I am looking at buying 10 x 8ft thuja and re siting in our new garden after moving house. I see it as a ready made screening but dubious about, removal, transporting and replanting. Any advice would be gold dust.

Many thanks.

Best time for that would be autumn. If they are quality products and come in a container, you don’t have anything to worry about. Water them daily and you won’t have any problems.
