Building an outdoor rabbit hutch
Building the frame of the rabbit hutch
The first step of the project is to build the frame of the rabbit hutch. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the 2×2 lumber at the right size and to lock them together with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the 2 1/2″ screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. In addition, make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws and add waterproof glue to the joints.
Attaching the plywood floor
Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood floor to the frame and lock it into place with 1 5/8″ galvanized screws. Align the plywood sheet with attention, making sure you make notches on both sides, in order to fit around the wooden legs.
Building the back of the hutch
Use 1×4 slats to build the back wall of the rabbit hutch. Make sure you don’t leave any gaps between the slats or use tongue and groove slats, as they will join together in a professional manner. Adjust the width of the top slat, in order to fit into place easily. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws.
Building the splitting walls
The next step of the project is to fit the splitting wall between the 1×1 supports and to the back wall. Plumb the wall with a spirit level, in order to get a professional result.

Make sure you follow the instructions described in the article when building the slitting wall. Use a good jigsaw to make the curved cut and a circular saw to make the straight cuts. Smooth the cut edges with a piece of sandpaper, in order to get a professional result.
Building the sides
Building the sides of the hutch is a straight-forward process, provided you use proper materials and tools. Mark the cut lines on the components and get the job done with a spirit level. Secure the slats into place with 1 5/8″ galvanized screws, after drilling pilot holes.
Building the small door
Building the small door is a quick project, but you need to pay attention to several aspects. Lay the slats on a level surface and attach the supports to them. Add waterproof glue to the joints and insert screws through the supports into the slats.
Building the large door
Fit the small door into place and secure it to the right leg with galvanized hinges. In addition, make a simple frame out of 2×2 lumber and attach a piece of chicken wire to build the large door. Fit the door into place and secure it with metal hinges to the left side of the rabbit hutch.
Building the rafters
Build the rafters out of 2×2 lumber and cut their ends at 7 degrees, by using a nice miter saw. Secure the rafters to the frame with screws, after making sure they are aligned properly and equally-spaced.
Building the roof of the rabbit hutch
Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood at the right size and attach it to the rafters. Drill pilot holes through the plywood sheet and insert the screws into the rafters after aligning it at both ends. Afterwards, cover the roof with tar paper and install the shingles. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions before fitting the rafters into place, as there are certain thing that you should know before fitting them.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough to support the soil. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.
