STEP 1: Building the window box
The first step of the project is to build the box. As you can see in the free plans, you need to cut 3 pieces of 1×8 lumber at 36″. Lay the slats on a level surface and then align the edges with attention. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock everything together tightly. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.
Next, you have to fit the 1×8 pieces to the both ends of the planter box. Align the edges and leave no gaps between the slats. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws.
Â
STEP 2: Attaching the trims
In order to enhance the look of the window flower box, you need to attach 1×2 trims to the exterior. Align the edges flush and use glue and 1 1/4″ nails to secure them into place.
Fit the 1×2 trims to the front of the planter box. Align everything flush and insert the nails.
Attach the 1×2 and 1×1 trims to the top of the planter box. Use a miter saw to make the 45 degree angle cuts. Use 2″ nails to secure the trims into place tightly.
Â
STEP 3: Building the braces
Use 1×3 lumber for the window box supports. Cut both ends of the brace at 45 degrees. Assemble everything with glue and 2″ nails.
Fit the supports to the walls and secure them into place with screws. Attach the window flower box and center it to the supports.
Make sure you take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to protect the components from the elements.
This is a cool and relatively simple to build garden project. You can make the window box larger, but still use all the techniques described in the tutorial. Check out all my planter plans HERE.
