Building a wishing well
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the base of the wishing well. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to attach the 1×6 slats to the 2×2 corner posts. Check if the corners are right-angled and make sure there are no gaps between the slats before inserting the screws into place. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the slats before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting.
Continue the project by making the frame of the wishing well. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size and sharp and to lock them together with galvanized screws and waterproof glue.
Plumb the stakes with a spirit level and center them to base with galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Attach the 1×3 trims to the sides of the wishing well and secure them into place with finishing nails. Align the trims properly before inserting the finishing nails, in order to get a professional result.
Fit 1×4 slats to the rafters starting with the bottom of the roof, making sure they overlap at least 1″. Make sure the top slats cover the head of the screws that hold the previous slats into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to get the job done in a professional manner.
Build the lid of the wishing well following the instructions describe in the article. Cut the slats at the right size and lock them together by fitting several supports. Make sure there are no gaps between the slats and check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.
Building the spindle and the handle is a straight-forward process, as you can easily notice in the plans. Cut the components at the right size and assemble them together with attention. Don’t forget to fit the washers, as they have an essential role in the process.
Build the handle by using the information shown in the article and attach it to the spindle, as shown in the plans.
Build the two washers out of 1×4 lumber using the information shown in the plans. Mark the cut lines with a pencil and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough to support the soil. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. See all furniture plans HERE.
PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
