STEP 1: Building the base of the swing stand
The first step of the project is to build the sides for the swing stand. Use 2×6 lumber for the base and 4×4 lumber for the posts. Use a circular saw to make decorative cuts to both ends of the base slats. Center the base beams to the posts and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the base and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the posts.
Use 4×4 lumber for the base braces. Use a circular saw to make 45 degree cuts at both ends of the braces.
Fit the braces to the base of the swing stand. Fit the braces to the base, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Â
STEP 2: Building the top of the swing stand
Use 2×8 lumber for the support beams. Use a circular saw to make decorative cuts at both ends of the beams.
Fit the beams to the base posts so that they overhang 12″ on both sides. Align the edges with attention and make sure the posts are plumb. Clamp the beams to posts, drill pilot holes through both the beams and the posts. Insert 8″ carriage bolts and then use washers and nuts to lock the components together tightly. Use at least 2 bolts for each joint.
Next, attach 4×4 braces to the swing stand, as shown in the diagram. Make 45 degree cuts at both ends of the yellow braces and at one end of the blue supports. Drill pilot holes and use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the braces to the beams and to the posts. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the supports between the beams.
Use 4×4 lumber for the rafters. Mark the cut lines to the beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked area and clean the recess with a chisel.
Fit the rafters to the top of the swing stand and place them equally spaced. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to protect the swing stand from the elements. Attach the hangers to the top supports.
