Outdoor Chair Plans

by Thomas

If you want to learn more about how to build a 2×4 outdoor chair, make sure you take a look over this article. I designed this outdoor chair so you can get the job done in a few hours using just 2x4s. In addition, making a few of these chairs will represent a bold statement for modernity. You could easily adjust the size of the chair and make it into a bench. This chair features an angled backrest so you can relax.

If you want to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to plan everything with attention, as to prevent costly mistakes and to build a professional garden bench. Invest in high quality materials, such as cedar, pine or redwood, as the bench will be exposed to all kinds of weather. Apply a few coats of paint over the components, to enhance their appearance and to protect them from bad weather.

Building a 2×4 patio chair

Building the legs

Building the legs

First of all, you need to build the front and the back legs for the chair from 2×4 lumber. Take accurate measurements and cut the legs at the right dimensions. For the front leg set the miter at 5 degrees. For the back leg make 67 degree cut and a 3 degree cut. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Side supports

Side supports

Continue the project by building the supports for the seat. Cut one end of the support at 82 degrees (set the miter at 8 degrees).

Assembling the sides

Assembling the sides

Fit the seat supports to the side legs. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Add waterproof glue to the joints to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

One of the last steps of the project is to take care of the finishing touches. Smooth the edges and the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain and then seal everything with spar varnish!

We recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. With this 2×4 chair you can easily create a super nice relaxation area in your backyard. Just make a few chairs and a small patio table and you are done!

PRO TIP: Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects. Check out free plans for a large deck chair.
