Materials

  • 1 – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 24″, 2 pieces – 32 1/2″ long LEGS
  • 2 – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 45″, 2 pieces – 15 1/2″ long, 1 piece – 12 1/2″ long SEAT FRAME
  • 3 – 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 48″ long SEAT
  • 4 – 1 piece of 2×4 lumber – 48″, 6 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 16″ long, 2 pieces – 7 3/4″ long BACKREST
  • 5 – 2 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 18″ long  ARMRESTS 

  • 8 pieces of 2×4 lumber – 8 ft
  • 2 1/2″ screws
  • wood glue, stain/paint

Tools

  • Hammer, Tape measure, Carpentry square
  • Miter saw, Drill machinery, Screwdriver, Sander, Router
  • Safety Gloves, Safety Glasses, Respiratory Mask

How to build a garden bench

Building a the seat frame

Cut the components for the seat frame out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the front and back components and insert 2 1/2′ screws into the sides. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to create rigid joints. Build the middle component out of 2×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the support to the seat frame and secure it into place using 2 1/2″ screws.

Attach the 2×4 slats to the seat frame. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the slats to the frame. Leave 1/2″ between the slats and align the edges.

Next, attach the 2×4 legs to the bench. Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the seat of the bench. Plumb the legs before inserting the screws and check if the corners are square.

Drill pocket holes along the top of the back legs. Insert 2 1/2″ screws into the top support. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Drill pocket holes along the top of the vertical components and secure them to the top support using 2×4 lumber. Secure the backrest slats to the seat with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal slats (7 3/4″ long) and secure them to the vertical supports with 2 1/2″ screws.

Build the armrests out of 2×4 lumber and attach them to the structure. Use a jigsaw to round one end of the armrests. Smooth the edges with sandpaper. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure the armrests into place.

This is an easy one day project for any builder. You can really build this bench without prior experience in woodworking. Smooth the edges with sandpaper, fill the holes with wood putty and then apply a few coats of paint / stain.
