How to install a fence post

Fitting the posts into concrete

There are several ways in which you can set a post into concrete. On one hand you could install the posts directly into concrete, if you want to set them in a rigid manner. Alternatively, you could set an anchor post to a concrete footing. Using an anchor post will keep the wooden post protected from moisture and therefore, decay, but the support will not be the same as in the previous case.

Fitting the wooden posts

Dig a 30″ deep holes having at least 10″ in diameter after choosing the location of the post. Pour gravel on the bottom of the hole before fitting the tube form. Align everything with attention and make sure the tube form is level and at least 1-2″ over the surface of the ground.

Plumbing the posts

Install the wooden post into the tube form and plumb it with a spirit level. It is essential to check if the post is plumb on all faces of the post. Fill the tube form with concrete and smooth the surface with a trowel.

Fitting the temporarily braces

Last but not least, you should secure the post with temporarily braces, as shown in the image. Use 2×4 boards and 2×2 posts to get the job done in a professional manner. It is essential to ask a friend to hold the post into place (check again if it is plumb) while you fill the tube form with concrete and install the braces.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
