Building a coffee table
The first step of the project is to build the legs of the coffee table and to lock them to the frame. As you can see in the image, you need to use 4×4 lumber when building the legs and 1×4 slats for the tabletop frame. Make sure you take accurate measurements and smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.
Building the frame of the table is a straight-forward job, if you follow the instructions described in the plans. As you can easily notice, we recommend to build a basic frame out of 1×4 and 2×2 slats. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws into place. Drill pocket holes if you want to create rigid joints.
PRO TIP: Plumb the legs with a spirit level before attaching the frame into place with screws. Use a spirit level to check if the frame is perfectly horizontal.
If you want to enhance the look of the table, we recommend you fit 2×4 trims between the legs of the table. Lock the trims to the frame of the tabletop by inserting screws from the inside.
Continue the woodworking project by assembling the tabletop, as shown in the image. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the parallel slats (the 2×4 slats) and lock them to the breadboards with 2 1/2″ screws. Leave no gaps between the slats and make sure you add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.
Lay the tabletop on a level surface and center the frame of the table with attention. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert the screws into the tabletop. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to create durable joints.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Check if the components are secured into place properly and if the frame is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges that could injure you. Check out plans for another table I have on the blog.
PRO TIP:Â Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
