Building a round picnic table
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the base of the round picnic table. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to build a cross-shaped support by using 2×4 lumber. Cut the components at the right dimension and lock them together with waterproof glue and pocket screws.
PRO TIP: Cut the ends of the components at 45 degrees, in order to enhance the look of the table. Drill pocket holes before inserting the screw, to prevent the wood from splitting.
Afterwards, cut a small piece of 4×4 lumber and attach it to the base support, as shown in the image. Drill pilot holes through the support and insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the post. Add waterproof glue to the joint in order to create a rigid structure.
Building the tabletop is not difficult if you use the right plans and techniques. Just lay the slats on a level surface and mark the cut lines with a spirit level. Use a spirit level to make the curved cuts and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Apply glue to the edges of the slats in order to get rigid joints.
Next, attach the frame to the countertop. As you can easily notice in the free plans, we recommend you to build the main frame using 2×4 lumber and the rest of the components from 1×4 lumber, in order to get a table with a neat appearance.
PRO TIP: Drill pilot holes, add waterproof glue and insert the screws from the bottom into the slats. Make sure the corners are right-angled before continuing the project.
If you really want to get the job done in a professional manner, you should consider adding 1×4 braces to the the post and to the countertop of the round picnic table. Cut both ends of the braces at 45 degrees and lock them to the frame with finishing nails.
Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Check if the components are secured into place properly and if the frame is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges that could injure you.
PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
