If you want to build a nice wooden work table for your shop, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. First of all, you need to select the right plans for your needs and to adjust the size and the shape of the work table to suit your needs. In addition, you should invest in high quality materials, such as pressure-treated lumber, making sure the components are perfectly straight and in a very good visual condition.

If you don’t have an extensive expertise in the woodworking field, we recommend you to plan every aspect of the project from the very beginning and to ask a skilled friend to assist you. Check if the corner are right-angled and plumb the posts with a spirit level before locking all the components together with screws and waterproof glue. Making the bottom shelf will add storage space the the work table and ease your work.

Assembling the frame of the table

Assembling the frame of the table

Before building the frame of the work table, we recommend you to adjust its size and shape to suit your needs. Cut the components after taking accurate measurements and lock them together with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert the 2 1/2″ screws into the posts. Plumb the legs and check if the corners are right-angled. Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond.

Building the support frame

Attach the frame of the tabletop to the legs of the work table and secure them into place with screws. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the supports before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Check if the supports are horizontal before attaching the rest of the components. In addition, make sure the corners are right-angled. Add waterproof glue to the supports before attaching the shelf.

Fitting the bottom shelf

Fitting the bottom shelf

Attaching the bottom shelf into place is a simple process, but you need to pay attention to several aspects. First of all, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the sheet of plywood and make the cuts with a proper circular saw. Fit the shelf into place and align at all ends before inserting the screws into the supports.

Attaching the tabletop

One of the last steps is to fit the tabletop to the frame of the work table and to secure it into place with finishing nails. In order to enhance the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to add glue to the top edges of the top supports.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Check if the components are secured into place properly and if the structure is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges that could injure you.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
