Wood Chest Plans

Building the frame of the chest

Building the frame of the chest

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the wood chest. Cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood and lock them together tightly. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the components and insert the screws into the perpendicular faces. Make sure the edges are flush and the corners right-angled, before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Fitting the bottom

Fitting the bottom

Cut the bottom of the chest out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the four edges. Fit the bottom to the frame of the chest, align it with great care and insert the 1 1/4″ screws into the frame. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess materials with a damp cloth.

Buidling the lid

Building the lid

Build the frame of the lid out of 3/4″ plywood or by using 1×4 slats. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and secure them to the perpendicular components with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Cut the top out of 3/4″ plywood and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Attaching the lid

Attaching the lid

Attach the lid to the wood chest and secure it into place by using metal hinges. Choose the metal hinges that have the most appropriate design for your needs and tastes.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
