If you want to learn more about how to build a garden box, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with attention and invest in high quality materials before starting the actual construction project. Choose the right garden box plans for your needs and adjust the size of the frame to suit your needs and to match the configuration of your backyard.

Work with attention and make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting and add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to create a rigid frame. Choose a proper location for the garden box, as the plants require at least 8 hours of full daylight every single day. Invest in weather-resistant lumber such as pine, redwood or cedar.

Building the sides of the garden box

Building the sides of the garden box

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the garden box. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to attach the 2×6 slats to the 4×4 corner posts. Drill pilot holes through the slats before inserting the screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. Add waterproof glue to the joints as to enhance the rigidity of the structure and make sure you leave no gaps between the slats.

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the slats to the front and to the back of the garden boxes. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into place. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Inserting the lag screws

Countersink the head of the bolts before inserting them into place. Leave about 1″ from the edges and drill pilot holes, in order to prevent the wood from splitting.

Attaching the side stakes

In order to keep the frame of the garden box perfectly straight on the long run, we recommend you to attach 2×2 stakes the both sides of the frame, as shown in the image. Cut the tips if the stakes in a V-shape, otherwise they won’t get into ground properly.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough to support the soil. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
