Attaching the supports

Attaching the supports

The first step of the project is to attach the 2×4 cleats between the posts, as in the image. In order to get the job done as a professional, we recommend you to drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats. Level the cleats with a spirit level and adjust their height, before inserting the galvanized screws into the posts.

The next step of the project is to fit the 2×4 rails to the top of the cleats, as in the free plans. Align the components at both ends and lock it to the cleats with finishing nails and waterproof glue.

Attaching the balusters

Attaching the balusters

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the 2×2 balusters to the cleats. Drill pilot holes trough the balusters and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the cleats. Align the balusters at both ends and place a wood block between them, if you want to create even gaps. Work with attention and with great care, making sure you adjust the distance between the balusters to your needs.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Round the exposed edges of the rails with a router and a 1/4″ bit.  Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project, to see how to build the frame as well as the railings.
