How to Build a Simple Bench

Building the side legs

Building the side legs

The first step of the garden project is to build the sides of the bench. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut the legs out of 2×10 lumber, after taking accurate measurements. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done in a professional manner using a jigsaw.

Fitting the supports

Fitting the supports

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs, as seen in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square and the supports are perfectly horizontal before inserting the screws into place. Add glue to the joints and leave it to dry out for several hours.

Fitting the seat

Fitting the seat

Cut the seat for the simple bench out of 2×12 lumber, as described in the plans. Use a circular saw to make the notches at both ends of the slats. Fit the slats to the frame of the bench and check if there are any gaps between the components. Add glue to the joints and insert 2 1/2″ screws through the supports into the seat.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
