Cat Tower Plans

by Thomas

This step by step diy woodworking project is about cat tower plans. If you want to keep your cat fit and in a good shape, you should consider building a nice tower for it. Plan the project with great care, as there are many things that could be overlooked and that will influence the total expenditures negatively. Adjust the size and the shape of the cat tower to your needs before buying the materials.

There are a few things that you should take into account before starting the actual construction of the cat tower. Therefore, we recommend you to build the constructions from quality lumber, especially if you want to keep the tower for many years. In addition, it is essential to take accurate measurements, especially when attaching the carpet pieces to the structure, otherwise the end result might not raise up to your expectations.

Building a cat tower

Building the base

Building the base

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the base of the car tower. As you can easily notice in the plans we recommend you to use 3/4″ plywood and 2×2 lumber to get the job done in a professional manner. Cut the plywood sheets as shown in the plans and lock them together tightly with galvanized screws. Cut a small notch inside the top platform, large enough to fit a 4×4 post.

The next step of the woodworking project is to install the 4×4 post into place. Plumb the post with a spirit level and lock them into place with galvanized screws. Drill pilot holes through the base of the cat tower and insert the screws into the post. Add waterproof glue to the joints if you want to get a rigid structure.

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the platforms to the central post. Cut the 3/4″ plywood sheet at the right size, making sure you make a small notch in one of the corners. Drill pocket holes through the plywood pieces and lock them to the posts with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws and glue. Make sure you check if the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square.

If you want to enhance the look of the cat tower, we suggest you to add the 1×2 or 1×3 trims to the edges of the platforms. Align the trims at both ends and lock them into place with galvanized screws and waterproof glue. Also, check my free plans for a window catio.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and if the frame is rigid. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges. Cover the components of the car tower with carpet and lock the pieces into place with glue.

PRO TIP: Take accurate measurements before attaching the carpet to the components. Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay.
