Building a storage bench

Building the sides

Building the sides

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the bench. Cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you mark the cut lines on the wooden pieces. Use a nice jigsaw to make the curved cuts and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Adding the bottom of the bench

Adding the bottom of the bench

The next step of the project is to attach the bottom to the sides of the bench. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the component and secure it to the sides with 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add waterproof glue to the joints. Plumb the sides of the bench and make sure the bottom is horizontal.

Adding the support slat

In order to enhance the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to fit a piece of plywood to the front of the bench, under the bottom component. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the support and secure it to the sides with galvanize screws. Add glue to the edges in order to enhance the bond of the components.

Fitting the splitting walls

Fitting the splitting walls

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 3/4″ plywood partitions and lock them to the bench, as described in the diagram. Make sure the corners are right angled before inserting the screws and add glue to the joints.

Attaching the back of the bench

Attaching the back of the bench

Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood and attach it to the back of the storage bench. Drill pilot holes and secure it to the structure with galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints, in order to create a durable bond.

Attaching the top

Attaching the top

Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood and attach it to the top of the storage bench. Drill pocket holes through the top of the side components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top. Add glue to the joints and let it dry out for several hours.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
