Park Bench Plans

by Thomas

Step by step woodworking project about wooden park bench plans. Choose quality plans when building a park bench, if you want to get a professional result from the very first attempt. This project features simple plans for a wooden park bench without a back support. If you want to build a more complex wooden bench, we recommend you to pay attention to the rest of the projects.

There are so many designs and plans that you could choose from, that you should take a look over them before choosing the best one for your needs. In addition, we recommend you to invest in the best quality materials you could afford, such as pine, redwood or cedar. Always align the components and drill pilot holes before inserting the screws or bolts, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Buidling the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs of the park bench. As you can notice in the image, we recommend you to use 2×6 lumber and to adjust the size of the legs according to your needs.

Attaching the supports

Attaching the supports

The next step is to attach the supports to the wooden legs. As you can notice in the image, you need to cut the ends of the 2×4 supports, as to give them a nice appearance. After you build the components, we recommend you to smooth the cut edges with medium-grit sandpaper or to round them with a router.

PRO TIP: Align the supports at both ends, making sure they are centered. Drill pilot holes trough the components and insert carriage bolts to lock them tightly. Add waterproof glue, if you want to create a rigid structure.

Building the frame

Use the information form the image when attaching the slats to the both sides of the wooden park bench. Nevertheless, you should adjust the designs and the size of the bench, as to fit your needs and tastes.

Attaching the seat slats

Attaching the seat slats

Attach the 2×4 slats to the supports, making sure you align them at both ends. Moreover, place the slats equally spaced, leaving about 1/2″ between them. Place a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the slats, if you want to get consistent gaps.

Installing the stretcher

Installing the stretcher

If you want to increase the rigidity of the structure, we recommend you to fit a 2×4 stretcher between the sides of the bench. Drill pilot holes trough the legs and insert 3 1/2″ galvanized screws into the stretcher. Countersink the head of the screws, in order to get a professional result.

Last but not least, there are several aspects you should take into account. Therefore, you should fill the holes with wood filler and smooth the wooden surface after it dries out. In addition, check if the front opens properly.

PRO TIP: Apply several coats of paint over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Make sure you choose light colors, such as green or white. Take a look on these furniture plans, if you want a basic birdhouse design.
