Building the frame

Building the frame

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the bistro table. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×2 lumber, making sure you take accurate measurements. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Continue the project by attaching the frame of the middle shelf. Adjust the height of the shelf in order to suit your needs. Work with attention and check if the corners are square.

Fitting the tabletop supports

Building the frame for the tabletop is a straight forward project, but you need to pay attention to the detailed shown in the diagram. Make sure the corners are square after attaching each component.

Fitting the shelves slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the frame of the shelves, in order to get the job done in a professional manner. Drill pilot holes through the slats before securing them to the frame using 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Lay the 1×4 slats on a level surface, making sure you leave about 1/4″ between them. Determine the center of the square and draw a nice circular with a diameter of 28 3/4″. Use a jigsaw to make the curved cuts and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, we recommend you to check if the components are locked into place properly and structure is rigid enough for your garden. Make sure there are no protruding screws or sharp edges.

PRO TIP: Fill the holes with a good wood filler and smooth the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Apply several coats of paint or stain over the components, in order to protect them from decay. Check out the rest of the project to learn more about building garden projects.
